Japanese technic Shou-Sugi-Ban (焼杉板) is an artistic finish for bringing out the natural character of the wood that also improves its durability. Surface layer of the wood under the influence of fire is clogged with resins and combustion products. With a slight thermal impact, the wood gets a golden hue, while a longer burning gives a wide palette from brown to silver-black. Uneven burning creates a "flicker effect". After burning the products are washed, brushed (remove soft fibers with metal brushes), grinded with abrasive brushes, polished with synthetic brushes and re-burned, then dried and impregnated with lacquer.
