Hawthorn (Crataegus) is a shrub or a small tree of the family Rosaceae. Hawthorn fruits (Fructus Crataegi), called shān zhā in Chinese, are used in traditional Chinese medicine, primarily as a digestive aid.
Fruits can be eaten dry or brewed.
Brewing suggestions. 5-6 g of dried fruits put in a thermos, pour boiling water (200-350 ml), close the lid and let it brew. After 15-20 minutes you will get a clear broth of peach hue, with tender, fruity aroma and refreshing taste with a bright, lemon sourness. Rings of softened fruit are also quite edible.
