Jiao Gu Lan, Jiaogulang, or Southern Ginseng (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is a vine of the genus Gynostemma, of the Gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). Its distibution area is China and other Asian countries. Jiao Gu Lan translates from Chinese as "climbing orchid". It is also called "syanzao" or "herb of immortality" for its general tonic and rejuvenating properties.
Jiao Gu Lan phyto-tea became especially popular in the beginning of 2000s, once some results of modern scientific researches had been released, about its healthful effects. Jiao Gu Lan increases immune status and adaptibility, positively affects cardiovascular system and normalizes blood sugar level.
Preparation: to make herbal tea, take a ceramic gaiwan or a clay/glass teapot, and hot (85-95°С) water. The proportion is 2 - 3 g of leaves to 150 ml of water. Use "pouring brewing method" (pouring hot water through leaves, gradually extending exposition time). Jiao Gu Lan tea has a specific spicy-sweetish taste with a note of bitterness, and a herbal-floral fragrance.
