"Spirits, Ghosts, and Gods: The Magical Inhabitants of Miyazaki's Worlds"
We are opening a course of lectures by Nina Voronina dedicated to symbolism in anime, manga and Japanese video games.
Let's start with Hayao Miyazaki and his breathtaking worlds filled with everyday wonders.
In an hour and a half we will learn:
- what invisible spirits and gods live in Japan (we started talking about them at lectures on the cult of mountains and Shinto), and what needs to be done to see them;
- how Japanese beliefs are reflected in Hayao Miyazaki's cartoons;
- what inspired the baths of Yubaba;
- who are the kodama, Totoro and the River Guardian.
The lecture is about 1.5 hours, plus about half an hour the lecturer takes away for questions.
Nina Voronina, a Japanese scholar and anthropologist of religion, reads.
